Lands and claims guide

Protect your builds, invite friends, level up your land, form nations and go to war. Open the menu in game with /lands.

How it works

Lands protects your builds. Inside your land, only the players you trust can build, open chests or use your things, and you decide exactly what each of them is allowed to do.

  1. Create your land

Stand where you want to build and type /lands create <name>. The 3 by 3 chunks around you are claimed for free.

  2. Claim more chunks

Walk to the next chunk and type /claim. Claiming is free. New claims must connect to your land.

  3. Trust your friends

Type /lands trust <player> to invite friends. Once they accept, they can build with you.

  4. Keep the bank topped up

Every 7 days your land pays a small upkeep per chunk. Put money in with /lands deposit <amount>.

You can claim land in the main world. The Nether, the End and spawn can't be claimed.

Claiming and limits

Land is claimed in chunks: 16 by 16 block columns that reach from the bottom of the world to the top. Type /lands map to see which chunks around you are free. The chunk border shows as particles when you claim: green is yours, yellow is a land you are trusted in, and red belongs to someone else.

Everyone starts able to claim 40 chunks and earns 1 more for every 3 hours played. That allowance is shared across every land you own or are a member of. Land levels and nations add more on top.

Members and roles

Every player in your land has a role, and each role has a list of action flags: switches for things like breaking blocks, opening chests, using doors or attacking animals. Change them in /lands under Roles. You can also create your own roles.

Running a shop? Players outside your land can't buy from your chest shops until you turn on Chest Shop Purchases for the Untrusted role. See the player shops guide.

Your land also has land flags that apply to everyone, such as whether monsters and animals spawn, leaves decay, crops grow and snow melts. You'll find them in the land menu too.

Land bank, upkeep and taxes

Every land has its own bank. Members with permission can deposit and withdraw. The bank pays your upkeep and its balance counts toward land levels.

Upkeep

Every 7 days, at 11 pm server time, each land pays $3 per claimed chunk. A 40-chunk land pays $120 a week. Higher land levels raise it by a percentage. New lands don't pay anything for their first 2 days. If the bank runs short, the rest comes from the owner's own balance, and members get a reminder in the 2 days before it's due.

Taxes

Owners can charge members a tax of up to $10 each cycle. It's paid into the land bank. A member who can't pay is removed from the land.

Land levels

Lands level up automatically when they meet every requirement for the next level. Each level adds bonus claims and member slots, but also raises your upkeep. Level bonuses don't apply while your land is in a nation, since the nation's level applies instead.

Nations

A nation is a group of lands that work together. Players from its lands get the Nation role in each other's lands, and the lands can fight wars side by side.

  • Creating one costs $20,000, and your land must be at the top land level (Land) first. Your land becomes the capital.
  • Up to 10 lands can join a nation.
  • Upkeep: the nation pays $3 per chunk across all its lands each cycle, instead of each land paying on its own. If it can't pay, the nation is disbanded, but its lands are kept.
  • Taxes: the nation can tax its lands up to $5 per chunk. A land that can't pay is removed from the nation.

Nations level up like lands. Higher levels give every member land extra claims and unlock potion effects the nation can switch on inside its lands.

Wars

Lands and nations can declare war on each other. Wars are optional, and you can only be attacked by someone who declares war on you.

  1. Declare

Declare war from the land or nation menu and choose a goal. Your land bank needs at least $5,000. Lands with a war shield can't be attacked, and new lands get a 1-day shield.

  2. Prepare

The defenders get 1 day to prepare before the war starts.

  3. Fight

Score points: 1 per kill and 5 per captured flag. Attackers can only act in a land while at least one defender is online.

  4. Win

The first side to reach the points target wins. The target is 5 points per player on the smaller team, and at least 100. If nobody reaches it in 36 hours, the side with more points wins.

Capture flags

Craft a capture flag with a red stained glass pane on top, a beacon in the middle and three iron blocks along the bottom. Place it in an enemy chunk between Y 30 and Y 127 and hold it for 10 minutes to capture the chunk. Defenders standing at the flag push the progress back. Each team can have 3 flags placed at once, and a captured chunk is unclaimed.

War goals

War goals
GoalWhat the winner gets
Skirmish75% of the loser's land bank (40% if they surrender). No land changes hands. Both sides get a 7-day war shield.
RaidFor 1 hour after the war, the winner's members can open the loser's chests and doors and break common building blocks (wood, stone, dirt and similar) to get in.
AnnexEvery losing land in the war loses all its claims. The loser gets a 3-day war shield.
VassalNations only. The loser's lands join the winner's nation as vassals and pay it taxes.
IndependenceA vassal fights to leave its overlord's nation.

During a war, enemies in your land can pick up items, fight and break or place only ladders, vines and scaffolding.

More features

  • Flying: you can fly inside your own land if your role allows it.
  • Sub-areas and renting: split your land into up to 20 areas with their own roles, and rent or sell them to other players.
  • Camps: a small temporary claim that protects your things while you're out exploring. It disappears after 1 day.
  • Relations: mark other lands as allies or enemies from the land menu.
  • Combat tag: after a fight you can't teleport away for 10 seconds.

Tips

Claim before you build, and claim a little extra around your base so nobody builds right up against it. Keep a few weeks of upkeep in the land bank, and give new members the Member role, not Admin, until you trust them.
